Okay, before we start I need to get something off my chest. I am totally an impulse buyer. If it looks cute and smells good, the candle is coming home with me. I’m not proud of my drawers filled with dozens of candles but hey...at least my house smells good right?
Something I am proud of though is that all of my candles are made with a soy wax base. Oftentimes as shoppers, we see a product we like and we don’t look into the aftermath of it all. Unknowingly we are harming our environment with paraffin wax and it’s something a lot of companies don’t talk about. So let’s break down the logistics of it all…
What is Paraffin Wax?
Paraffin wax, also known as petroleum wax, is derived from the refining process of lubricating oil and comes directly from fossil fuels. “This fuel goes through an extensive process before it becomes wax. Typically, the fuel is blended and processed with chemicals and other components before it becomes paraffin wax” says Edward Jacob from the CraftInsider.
It is often used in the candle making industry because of its durability and slow burning process. However, when burning paraffin wax, it releases toxic fumes known as soot - a black powdery or flaky substance that is released into the air in liquid droplets or small particles.
Because of this, we chose to use soy wax.
What is Soy Wax?
Soy wax is derived from soybean oil which creates an all natural, plant-base for our candles. Soy wax emits up to 90% less air pollution than paraffin wax and is biodegradable. Aside from the obvious green advantages, natural soy wax burns cleaner + slower giving your candle a longer life while putting off little to no black soot.
